How to get a finance job in the UK

For front-office (IB, asset management, trading): The graduate scheme route through the major banks is standard. These recruit 12–18 months ahead of start dates — spring weeks and summer internships are the main pipeline. Use the spring week deadlines tracker and apply early. Networking via LinkedIn with alumni from your target firms genuinely works in finance more than in other sectors.

For accounting and practice: ACA via a Big 4 or mid-tier firm is the most structured path. ACCA offers more flexibility — you can study while working in industry without being formally enrolled at a firm. Most employers cover exam costs for ACCA; Big 4 ACA training contracts are typically paid with a London or regional salary.

For fintech: More meritocratic than traditional finance. Strong technical skills (Python, SQL, data) + product sense open doors without needing the traditional qualifications. Revolut, Monzo, Wise, Checkout.com, and Starling are the biggest UK employers and each have fast-growing product + engineering orgs.

Finance salary negotiation

Finance is one of the sectors where salary negotiation is most expected and least penalised. Especially in banking and consulting, there are defined bands and room to negotiate.
