5 cover letter rules for UK job applications in 2026
1. Open with something specific
The biggest mistake in UK cover letters is opening with "I am writing to apply for..." — every recruiter has read this thousands of times. Open with something about the company, a specific achievement, or a bold statement about your value.
2. Keep it to one page
UK cover letters should be one page maximum — ideally 200–300 words. Recruiters will not read more. Every word must earn its place. Cut anything that restates your CV.
3. Name the company every time
