How to find and land part-time work in the UK

State your hours upfront

Put "Available Mon–Fri 9am–2pm" or "20 hours/week max" in your cover letter. Saves everyone's time.

Target companies that list flexible roles

Look for job ads that say "term-time only", "school hours", "job share considered", or "flexible working available".

Negotiate a full-time role to part-time

Around 30% of part-time roles are never advertised — people get them by asking. Apply to full-time roles you want and propose going part-time.

Remote part-time doubles your options

A remote part-time role means you can take on 2–3 clients or employers simultaneously. Great for building income while studying or caregiving.

Your rights as a part-time worker in the UK

Under the Part-Time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000, part-time workers have the same rights as full-time workers on a pro-rata basis. This means:

  • Same hourly rate (National Living Wage: £12.21/hr for 21+ as of April 2025)
  • Pro-rata holiday — at least 5.6 weeks/year pro-rated to your hours
  • Access to the same pension scheme (auto-enrolled if earning over £10,000/year)
  • Same sick pay rules as full-time staff
  • Right to request flexible working from day one (new law from April 2024)

If you're offered a part-time role at a lower hourly rate than full-time colleagues doing the same job, that's unlawful unless the employer can justify it objectively.
