| Agency / Bank | Very High | Highest hourly rates especially nights/weekends. No sick pay or pension. Maximum flexibility. |
| Care Homes / Residential | Very High | Nurse-led care. Often Band 5 equivalent pay. More autonomy. Chronic staffing shortage. |

How to get more callbacks in nursing job applications
NMC revalidation and PIN visibility matters on your CV
Always include your NMC PIN and revalidation status. Hiring managers and ATS filters check for registration before anything else. State it clearly at the top of your CV.
Specialism is the fastest route to Band 7+
General nursing peaks around Band 6. Moving into oncology, ITU, theatres, or mental health — and gaining the relevant post-reg qualifications — unlocks Band 7 and specialist roles at £43–55k.
Independent prescribing (V300) adds £3–8k immediately
The V300 non-medical prescribing qualification is the single biggest salary lever for Band 6/7 nurses. It opens ANP, CNS, and GP surgery roles that are consistently in shortage.
Apply across NHS trusts, not just your local one
London weighting adds £5–6k to NHS pay. Trusts with retention issues often offer welcome bonuses, relocation packages, or accelerated Band 6 progression. Apply broadly to compare offers.
The nursing job market in the UK — 2026
Nursing remains one of the most in-demand professions in the UK. The NHS alone employs over 350,000 registered nurses, and chronic understaffing means vacancies are consistently high across all regions and specialisms. The vacancy rate has moderated slightly from the post-pandemic peak but remains well above pre-2020 levels — particularly in mental health, community nursing, and specialist roles.
Private healthcare has expanded significantly since 2022. Spire, BMI, Nuffield, and a growing number of independent sector providers are actively competing with NHS trusts for experienced Band 5 and 6 nurses, often offering salaries 10–20% above NHS equivalents without the on-call demands of acute settings.
NHS pay bands for nurses — Agenda for Change 2026
NHS nursing pay is governed by the Agenda for Change (AfC) framework. Band 5 covers newly qualified and staff nurses (£29,970–£36,483). Band 6 covers senior staff nurses and specialist roles (£37,338–£44,962). Band 7 covers ward managers, sisters, and clinical nurse specialists (£46,148–£52,809). Band 8a covers advanced nurse practitioners and senior CNS roles (£53,755–£60,504). London weighting adds a significant supplement on top — High Cost Area Supplement ranges from 5% (outer London) to 20% (inner London).
NMC registration — what you need
All practising nurses in the UK must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Registration requires a pre-registration nursing degree (BSc or equivalent) or international qualification recognised by the NMC. Overseas nurses must pass the NMC CBT and OSCE assessments. Revalidation every 3 years is mandatory — failure to revalidate means loss of registration and the right to practise.
