4 entry-level job myths (and the reality)

"3 years experience required for an entry-level role"

Reality: A legal requirement that cannot be enforced. Apply anyway — the shortlist is made by humans, not AI in many companies.

"You need a 2:1 from a top university"

Reality: Outside of grad schemes at the biggest banks and law firms, most employers care about skills and CV more than university ranking.

"You need work experience to get work experience"

Reality: Freelance projects, side projects, open source contributions, and internships all count. Many internships are paid and count as experience.

"One application = one interview"

Reality: Average callback rate on entry-level applications is 4–7%. Plan to apply to 40–80 roles to get 3–6 interviews.

How to get your first job with no experience

Apply to more than you think you need to. Most first-time job seekers apply to 10–15 roles and wait. The math doesn't work at that volume — callback rates on entry-level roles average 4–7%. You need to be sending 50+ applications to reliably get 3–4 interviews. Autoply is built exactly for this: upload your CV once and apply to 100 matching roles overnight.

Your CV is the bottleneck, not your experience. An entry-level CV with strong formatting, quantified bullet points, and ATS-compatible structure will outperform a CV listing more experience but formatted poorly. Use the free CV scorer to find out if your CV is passing the ATS filter.

Cover letters are optional at most entry-level roles — but for roles where they are required, they matter a lot. Use the free cover letter generator to write a tailored letter for each role without it taking an hour per application.

Grad schemes vs direct entry-level roles

Grad schemes at large employers (Big 4, banks, Unilever, Civil Service) are structured 2–3 year programmes with rotations, dedicated L&D, and a defined career path. They're competitive (3–5% acceptance rates) but worth applying to if your grades and extracurriculars are strong.

Direct entry-level roles are faster to get into (offer within weeks, not months), less structured, and more common. For most people, starting in a direct role and learning on the job gets you to the same place 2 years later as a grad scheme — with a thicker CV.

Apply to both. The Autoply Grad Tracker lists the deadlines for all major UK grad schemes so you don't miss the window.
