NHS vs private sector healthcare — which to choose?
The NHS offers job security, pension (one of the best employer pensions in the UK), and Agenda for Change pay scales that are transparent and non-negotiable. The private sector — Bupa, Spire, HCA, KIMS, Ramsay — typically offers higher base pay (10–30% above NHS Band for equivalent roles), more flexible hours, and a different patient mix (elective rather than emergency).
For clinical staff, many choose to do both: NHS hours for the pension and security, private work for supplemental income. Bank and agency work is also common — particularly for nurses and HCAs who want flexibility over fixed contracts.
Getting into health tech from a clinical background
Health tech is one of the best career pivots for experienced clinical professionals. If you have 3+ years in clinical practice and can develop an understanding of product management, data, or implementation consulting, you can command £55–90k in health tech roles where your clinical credibility is irreplaceable.
Bridge skills: basic SQL and data literacy, understanding of EPR systems (EPIC, Cerner, SystmOne, EMIS), PRINCE2 or Agile project management. These take 6–12 months to develop alongside clinical work.
How to apply for NHS jobs
Most NHS jobs are advertised on NHS Jobs (jobs.nhs.uk) and Trust-specific career portals. NHS Jobs has a standardised application form — you cannot submit a CV directly for most clinical roles. You must complete their competency-based application form with specific examples.
For non-clinical NHS roles (admin, project management, digital, finance) — applications are more CV-led and this is where Autoply can help you apply at volume to Trust vacancies that do accept CVs.
